| | My Visit to Kern County, California 27 April - 2 May 1998 |
Each year, the Kern Reading Association sponsors the KRA Young Authors' Fair. This is a fantastic event involving dozens of schools, thousands of students and teachers, and scores of volunteers. The Reading Association brings in about 10 authors to spend the week in Kern County visiting schools and talking with students. It is a very well-respected event among authors and I felt very privileged to be invited. I had an incredible time. I made lots of new friends and was touched and inspired by the students, teachers and volunteers I met. Thanks so much to event chairman Debbie Wakelee for inviting me. She, and everyone on her committee, did a fantastic job!

Kernville Elementary principal Rob Bray, teacher (and rafting guide) Mike Lane, and rafting guide (and teacher) Darby, took me whitewater rafting on the Kern River after my school presentations. What a wonderful day I had. The school was great, the teachers enthusiastic and friendly, the students were great and I got to go rafting! Many thanks to Rob, Mike and Darby for a nice adventure.
